Skiing @ the bottom of the world #2

Skiing down the backside of the Castle Rock. The flags mark the trail, it doesn't look too steep ... but trust me in a power snow plow on 3 inch boards it's a challenge!

Skiing on the sea ice trail back to base, along huge glacial ice tongues like this one.

Skiing @ the bottom of the world #1

Skiing to Castle Rock and looping down around the sea ice was a challenge on 1980's classic style cross country skis, about 4 inches underfoot. I think I'll go back to skiing my fatty boards in the future. Needless to say we couldn't really turn so a power snowplow got us down the significant hill that if you veered off the track you could end up in a crevasse ice area - good times! We still had a great day with sunny clear weather, decent snow and great scenery!

cape evans #3

Hi all: A couple last pix from our very cool Cape Evans adventure. Have they already started playing holiday music back home ?? We receive armed forces radio, NPR and BBC & it's already started! M

cape evans trip part deux

Some more pictures from inside Scott's hut at Cape Evans, which was his base for his 2nd & last South Pole attempt. Scott and his team made it to the Pole and then froze to death on their return to Cape Evans.

Camping - Antarctic Style

Hello everyone! I've attached some pictures from my 2-day overnight "happy camper" class - aka Outdoor Survival School. The weather the first day was about -13F with fairly heavy winds which dropped the temp that much more. I can't say I had a great time, but I can now say that I spent a night in the Antarctic wild. Enjoy the pictures!
